HISTORY

The name of Petrosino has roots that are mixed up between history and legend .. Two are the most credible argument: the most fascinating is the one linked to St. Peter the Apostle. It is said that the Apostle during one of his voyages between Rome and Jerusalem, to get away from a bad storm, it would have landed on the bay of Biscione comfortable. So Petrosino's name derives from Latin words Sinus (Bay) and Petri (Peter), ie the Gulf of Peter. To prove this, however, there is no historical document. The other most popular theory is simplistic and tied to its distinctive name that seems to derive from the greek word "PETROSILION" in local dialect, which became "PIDRUSINU", it says that in the past, in this uninhabited area to grow in abundance of a type of grass aromatic, better known as parsley, this feature was for vegetative that the place was called Petrosino. Although Petrosino is a common young man, born in 1981 in fact, has a very significant past. If we go back in time, when the area was still uninhabited, the first buildings that were erected were of a military nature: it was a sighting towers in order to organize the defense in the event of incursion of pirates. Between X el'XI Petrosino century was affected by the presence Arab pearl wealth of the land, with the presence of hardwood forests, and for the position, as well as the importance of tuna. In 1144 the king Rugiero I subscribe to the Act for grant of Sicily to trap the Bishop of Mazara, an event of great importance because the income taxes on the tuna were not more to the residents but to the Bishop. After the 1453 Mediterranean multiplied fleets of pirates who suddenly attacked the coastal cities, which had complained to the viceroy Nuza. With the advent of Charles V in 1516, Spain organized some expeditions to fight the pirates and in 1549 began the fortification of the city with the construction of 7 bastions. Were erected, in fact, several watchtowers, one of them is Sicily Torre, in the Gazzarella (now Via Torre Sibiliana). Were completed in 1553 along the shores of the 37 towers began in 1549, they were displaced in that fire and smoke could soon put the alarm across Sicily. In 1575 the order of King Philip II, who ordered to seal the ports little gains and Sicilians hardly defensible, striking the port of Marsala, one of the largest in Sicily. The loss of the port provides for the forfeiture of maritime and commercial activities giving greater impetus to the development of agriculture. Later, King Ferdinand the Catholic authorized the division of land to other nobles and bourgeois, these forms of grant payments, thus saw an increased need to fortify the territory, and the whole countryside is dotted with towers. Each tower had ed'abbeveratoio well and was a small fortress, where peasants and pastoralists could take refuge. In this type of towers belong Tower Triglia "in-contrada Triglia Scaletta and" Torre Galvaga "in contrada Ramisella. In 700 it began to build new types of structures, the so-called Case-towers, which mimicked the towers Spanish. They had a dual function, both to protect from predators, and to have housing close to land to cultivate, so close to these towers were built warehouse for storage and processing of agricultural products, examples of these Case - Petrosino towers can find them in the "Chiano tower" and in "Contrada staple. In this period development in wine was the focus of political - social - economic, thanks to the impulse that gave the British, especially with regard to Petrosino Woodhouse. John Woodhouse arrived on the coast to buy soda petrosilene send in England, but found good quality local wine began to assure that they export to his country by imposing on the world market the first product "made in Sicily." A John Woodhouse was responsible for the construction of the first "Baglio", a luxurious villa in the neoclassical style and strong artistic value. Of that building remains today the portal, a symbol of the municipality. Beginning in the nineteenth century the peasants began to build houses in their camps to live permanently, as it was too difficult and expensive to transport the grapes in the city. Thus the first "bagliotti", such as "Beam Spanò", "Baglio Basile" and "Don Federico Baglio, which during the century it expanded to become what today are known as" Chiani. Inside the Chiano stood usually a small votive newsstand called "Fiureddra" depicting the saint to whom the Chiano was dedicated. In the post-war campaigns are urbanization and with the advent of new means of transport began to build new houses along the main roads. In 1941 was inaugurated by the time the first bus Petrosino - Marsala. Over 50 years, through the good offices by Francesco de Vita, Petrosino began to take on the appearance of a real country, thanks to the construction of public works such as asphalt roads, the first lighting system, water supply, school and cemetery . E 'il 1947 when Joseph Putaggio, becoming spokesman for the Petrosileni, made the first call for independence from the town of Marsala, which however was rejected. We try 10 years later with Carmelo Benigno, who was placed in charge of the pro - independence, but this attempt also failed. A try in 1954, was Baldassare Pipitone, but this time did not go through. They had to spend about 23 years to reach the historic turning point, on 21 May 1977, in fact, he was elected president of the pro-autonomy of the professor Vincenzo Petrosino Licari, which gathered about 3,000 signatures, accompany the request for independence of the documentation required by law and presented all 'Assessorato regional and social institutions that endorsed and forwarded a copy of the draft delimitation. The Sicilian Regional Assembly finally passed the bill and 10 July 1980 was established the 24th municipality in the province of Trapani: Petrosino. The new legislation was published in the Regional Official regional Sicilian, 26 July, which consists of 4 items and was called "Law 21 July No. 72." Petrosino was initially ruled by a commissioner appointed by the region and were called the first municipal elections. At its meeting on 9 July 1981, the new city council approved the resolution n ° 3 with which he was elected as the first mayor to Professor Giuseppe Pipitone.
